When you’re looking to hire a developer, the questions of language and frameworks always come up. While a good developer can pick up a new tool quickly and be successful, it’s helpful to know how fast the learning curve will be.
Being primarily an embedded software developer, my sharpest tool is C. My toolbox, however, contains a number of other tools for which I am proficient. Maybe you’re looking for C++? Or maybe something more modern like Go? Maybe your project makes use of scripting languages like Ruby or Lua?
I focus on keeping my tools sharp, and on learning new tools. I’ve taught myself a new language almost every year since I’ve become a developer. This practice keeps me in a learning mode, and provides a fresh perspective that can be brought back to my primarily tools.
